My sleeping brain allowed my ear to stay in tune to their needs during the night with the child monitor. However, I was never allowed to close the bathroom door as I needed to hear what was going on in the next room when they got big enough to climb out of their crib and even if I had the door closed then they would come in on me. Mothers never get true 'alone time' in those early years and even as they grow older. Behind 'closed doors' was the only was DH & I could have private conversations about our children to figure out, what he/she needs or how to handle a situation. After kids entered our world we not only had to keep intimate moments behind 'closed doors' but make sure the door was locked. I always feared one of our wee ones would come in on us at the wrong possible moment. lol Now, that the house is empty we still keep our bedroom door closed and locked but that's for a sense of security. It always provides a layer to block appliances and other noises in our home. My mother simply thought all doors should be open. If they were closed, you were sure to get a knock and then an abrupt open. I also equate closed doors with opportunity that is denied us ... but maybe because there's something better waiting...
